Pundit thinks Real Madrid may have just made Tottenham’s season harder

Tim Sherwood has claimed that Real Madrid’s comprehensive win over Liverpool on Tuesday is bad news for Tottenham as the Reds will now be able to focus all their efforts on getting into the top four.

Tottenham leapfrogged Newcastle United to go into fourth place with their 2-0 win over West Ham United on Sunday after the Magpies fell to a 2-0 loss at St James Park to Liverpool.

The win for Jurgen Klopp’s men has brought them back into the race for Champions League qualification as they now set just seven points below Spurs with two games in hand over the Lilywhites.

Liverpool’s ambitions of becoming European champions were all but ended on Tuesday as Real Madrid came from two goals down to win 5-2 at Anfield in the first leg.

Klopp admitted following the defeat that he believes that the tie is done and dusted ahead of his side’s visit to Santiago Bernabeu (Daily Mail).

Sherwood believes that the result is not good news for Antonio Conte’s men as Liverpool can now concentrate all their efforts on the league until the end of the season.

The former Spurs interim head coach said on Sky Sports after Real Madrid’s 5-2 win: “Their [Liverpool’s] season’s over. What have they got? They’ve got the top four now,” the former Spurs boss said.

“That’s a bad result for Tottenham who are in the top four because now if they [Liverpool] can get over the disappointment, they have to focus on one thing now and that is getting into the top four. That’s very, very important.”

Sherwood is right in saying that Liverpool getting knocked out is not good news for Spurs but at the same time, a big defeat like the one the Reds suffered on Tuesday, would have severely dented their players’ confidence and it could prove quite hard for them to recover from the drubbing.
