Pundit thinks Spurs and Newcastle would have to pay £50m to land midfield target

Alan Hutton believes that despite Conor Gallagher’s contract situation, Chelsea would demand £50m for the rumoured Tottenham and Newcastle target this summer.

It is no secret that Tottenham are big admires of Gallagher, with Fabrizio Romano explaining just last week that the 24-year-old had been identified as the number one target by Ange Postecoglou as soon as he walked through the door at Hotspur Way last summer (GiveMeSport).

This summer seems like the ideal time for Spurs to pounce on the England international, who has just a year left on his deal, with Chelsea expected to put him up for sale due to their PSR issues (The Times).

Although it has emerged over the last week that Newcastle are also keen on securing Gallagher, Tottenham are thought to be well-placed to beat the Magpies to the player’s signature (Football Insider).

Conor Gallagher could cost as much as £50m

Given how well the midfielder has played this season, Hutton believes that the Blues will not let him leave on the cheap.

When asked about Newcastle’s interest in Gallagher, the pundit told Football Insider: “I think he’d be a major asset to Newcastle or any team that he went to. It would be really silly for Chelsea to let him go, even though I understand that they may need to balance their books. It would be all profit for them because he came through their youth ranks.

“At the end of the day, he’s a top player, so why would they want to lose someone like that? If he goes to Newcastle, does he make them a better team? Of course, he does. He makes the starting line-up stronger, he makes the squad stronger.

“If he is up for sale, it really depends on what kind of budget Newcastle have to spend this summer as he might be out of their budget. Chelsea would ask for up to £50million. It will happen for that. But there’s no doubt he’d be a massive asset.”

Chelsea would need to sell Gallagher before the end of June to alleviate their PSR concerns and one would expect Daniel Levy to test the waters with an offer of around £25m-£30m as the Spurs chairman will view this as an opportunity to land the midfielder on a discount.
