Pundit tips 24-year-old Spurs star to become ‘one of the best’ in the world

Jamie Redknapp has revealed that he has no doubts Cristian Romero is going to evolve into one of the best central defenders in world football.

While centre-backs can often take a year or two to get adjusted to the pace and physicality of the Premier League, that was not the case with Romero, who took to the competition like a duck to water after arriving from Atalanta last summer.

The Argentine international has become an indispensable part of Antonio Conte’s back three alongside Eric Dier and Ben Davies.

The 24-year-old was a key reason why Spurs were able to keep 16 clean sheets in the Premier League during the 2021/22 campaign and he was sorely missed when he was out of action for a couple of months with a hamstring injury.

The Telegraph reported this week that Tottenham will trigger the £41m option to buy Romero permanently this month on the back of his impressive debut season.

Redknapp has said he has ‘no doubts’ the Argentina international is going to become one of the best in the world by working with Conte.

The former Liverpool and Spurs midfielder told Sky Sports Football podcast: “Romero is going to be one of the best central defenders in the world, there is no doubt about it. He can be a bit rash, make bad decisions, win balls when he can’t. But he is going to learn from Conte, a fantastic signing.”

Spurs Web Opinion

Romero certainly has some world-class attributes but I still do not think he has the temperament to be considered a world-class centre-back.

Even against Southampton, the 24-year-old made a completely unnecessary two-footed scissor-motion challenge that could have seen him sent off on another day, with the result already in the bag at that point.

At 24 years of age, he is certainly mature enough to cut that out from his game and I do worry if his hot-bloodedness will cost us in a crucial game or two this season.
