Pundit urges Newcastle United to make January bid for Tottenham player

Former footballer-turned-pundit Don Hutchison made a bold claim on his Twitter account, suggesting Newcastle United should make a bid for Tottenham Hotspur star Harry Kane during the January transfer window.

Despite Tottenham’s poor run of form, Kane is still having a strong season with 14 goals to his name already this term (Transfermarkt).

The 29-year-old has been breaking records left, right, and centre too. Not only did he become England’s joint all-time top goalscorer (Four Four Two) during the 2022 World Cup, but he is also now just four goals away from equaling Jimmy Greaves’ record as Spurs’ all-time top scorer, too (My Football Facts).

With just 18 months remaining on his current contract though (Transfermarkt), there has been speculation that Kane could look to leave Spurs in the near future.

According to The Athletic, Bayern Munich chiefs have spoken to Kane’s people regarding a possible move to Germany. However, CBS journalist Ben Jacobs told the Spurs Chat podcast that the links with Bayern are ‘exaggerated’ and insisted the belief is Kane will sign a new contract at Spurs.

If Kane was looking to leave, Hutchison seems to think Premier League rivals Newcastle United would be a great destination for him, and thinks the Magpies should try their luck with a bid this month.

On Twitter, he said: “If I’m Newcastle I would be all over Harry Kane in January and the summer! He would be a sensation up there.”

Spurs Web Opinion

It’s worth noting there are no concrete links suggesting Newcastle United are even considering a bid for Harry Kane, and this is just an idea Hutchison put forward.

It would be very bold of Newcastle to try and take Harry Kane away from Spurs in the middle of the season, and while I’m sure they have the funds to make it happen, I would be willing to bet my mortgage on the fact that a bid will not come, and that Spurs would reject it anyway.
