Pundit urges one Tottenham player to be patient and not to ‘lose confidence’

Former Romanian international Dorin Goian has urged Radu Dragusin not to lose confidence and has backed the centre-back to come good at Tottenham Hotspur.

While Dragusin would have been aware when he made the switch from Genoa to Tottenham that it would not be easy to force himself into Ange Postecoglou’s starting eleven, perhaps the defender would not have anticipated it to be as difficult as it has proven to be.

Given the form of Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven, the 22-year-old had to wait two months for his first Spurs start and that outing did not go according to plan as he struggled at Craven Cottage as Tottenham were on the end of a 3-0 defeat.

Dragusin made amends with his solid performance against Luton Town last Saturday but the centre-back dropped back to the bench for the London derby against West Ham on Tuesday, with Van de Ven taking his place in the starting eleven after recovering from injury.

Radu Dragusin needs to be patient at Tottenham

Gorin has now advised his compatriot not to let his head drop and to prove himself in training to Ange Postecoglou and his coaching staff.

The 43-year-old, who now manages Foresta Suceava, told Romanian outlet Sport about Dragusin: “My message is do not lose confidence and train really well. He must show the coach that he is valuable, and every time he enters the field, a half, a match or a few minutes, to play as well as possible.

“I am sure he will have many chances to play. It is important not to lose his temper and confidence! That’s how it is with the big teams, the competition is very high. It is important that he trains very well every day, and when he comes in to show that he is valuable.”

Spurs Web Opinion

While Spurs fans and the pundits can repeat cliches about having a strong squad and top-quality backups on the bench, the reality is that top players would not want to warm the bench.

In positions like centre-back, most managers will want continuity and would not want to rotate their options. Even with Tottenham’s involvement in Europe next season, Dragusin is not going to be the preferred starter in big games unless there is an injury to one of Romero or Van de Ven.
