Pundit urges Spurs to consider loaning defender to Newcastle instead of abroad

Noel Whelan has suggested Tottenham should look to loan Japhet Tanganga to Newcastle instead of a club abroad as he would benefit from more Premier League experience.

Tottenham are allegedly in talks with AC Milan over securing a potential loan deal for Tanganga, 22, until the end of the season (BBC Sport).

The report stated that any decision regarding the central defender’s immediate future would be made after the club’s London derby against Chelsea.

However, Whelan believes such a move would not be entirely beneficial for Tanganga’s development, and suggests a move across the Premier League to a club like Newcastle would be a better fit.

Whelan told Football Insider: “A Premier League side, absolutely. Premier League football, getting that experience, that would benefit Tottenham, it would certainly benefit going somewhere like Newcastle.

“He hasn’t had too much Premier League experience but he has played in the Premier League and he’s a very good defender.

“He can also play that wing-back role if need be. It gives you options.”

Tanganga has made 19 appearances in all competitions this season and recently stepped into the starting line-up to fill the absence of Eric Dier.

The England U21 international is under contract at Spurs until the summer of 2025 having signed a long-term deal over 18 months ago.

Tanganga’s last few games have been very shaky as one of the centre-backs and it is pretty clear to see that he needs a loan to gain more experience. However, Antonio Conte may not owe willing to sanction such a move given some of the issues he has experienced with his defenders already this season.
