Pundit urges Tottenham Hotspur to sign Championship defender in January

Football journalist Süleyman Öztürk has urged Tottenham Hotspur to look at signing Leeds United defender, Pascal Struijk, in the January transfer window.

After last season’s disastrous defensive displays, Tottenham clearly needed reinforcements at the back this summer. The signing of Micky van de Ven proved to be hugely successful, with the Dutchman forging a brilliant partnership with Cristian Romero.

However, van de Ven will now be out of action for a while, after pulling his hamstring in the defeat against Chelsea on Monday night.

With Romero also suspended for the next three matches, Tottenham’s lack of depth at the back has been exposed. It’s now likely that Eric Dier will step in, and there could even be opportunities for youngster, Ashley Phillips, too.

Spurs should sign Pascal Struijk

Once the January transfer window opens, it’s expected Spurs will be looking to add new defenders to their squad. And, according to Süleyman Öztürk, they should be keeping an eye on Pascal Struijk.

Öztürk said: “He was very strong throughout the match, but also really decisive. I also thought it was very good in the build-up from behind. He is a complete and mature defender.

“Now that Micky van de Ven has been injured, I would like to give Ange Postecoglou some advice: Struijk can easily join the defence of Tottenham Hotspur. That boy really plays at too low a level. I can well imagine that a big club will come for him in January.

“He really is the best defender in the Championship at the moment. I think he will make that step, because getting into the Dutch selection from the second level is difficult. I really think he’s great.”

Spurs Web Opinion

I have feared the worst for a while, and it happened on Monday night. Van de Ven and Romero were doing so well together, but now the former will be out for a long time and we desperately need cover.

Struijk always did well in the Premier League for Leeds, and he could be an interesting option for us in January who would likely not break the bank, either.
