Ange Postecoglou’s confident assertions

Postecoglou has been more than happy to put pressure on himself and his team this season by repeatedly asserting Tottenham’s ambitions to win the biggest trophies.

Back in August, he pointed out that he always tends to win silverware in his second season at clubs (Sky Sports), and that comment has received plenty of backlash.

In an interview with Optus Sport last week, the Tottenham boss insisted that he will not adapt his methods just because he is now competing in the Premier League.

Jermaine Pennant’s warning

Pennant has now suggested that Postecoglou has to understand that he is now competing in the best league in the world and that winning things in England will not be as easy as his previous adventures.

Reacting to the Spurs boss’ comments, the former Liverpool man told talkSPORT: “Every second season he’s won something, so he can say that.  But he’s got to understand that he’s now in the Premier League. It’s not the SPL. It’s not the Aussie A-League.

“It’s the Premier League. To win something here, you’ve got to be a good manager and have a good team. But like I said, he’s done it. So he can say that.”

Intended target for Postecoglou’s messages

Many understandably see Postecoglou’s assertions as arrogant and wonder why he is putting more pressure on himself by voicing these publicly.

However, the Australian may be saying this to prove to his players that he completely believes that they can be successful playing in this manner.

The 59-year-old is trying to change the culture of Tottenham and one of the ways to do that would be to have the courage of his convictions by spelling out their grand ambitions publicly.
