Ex-chairman warns manager does not have the ‘credentials’ for the Spurs job

Simon Jordan has suggested Tottenham Hotspur should not be considering appointing Michael Carrick as their next manager, as he isn’t ready for that step yet.

Tottenham are now two months into their search for a new permanent manager and appear to be no closer to finding a full-time successor to Antonio Conte.

An array of managers have been linked with the role, but many have backed off from the speculation and committed to their current clubs.

Carrick, a former Spurs player, has previously been mentioned as a possible candidate for the vacant managerial role at the North London club (talkSPORT).

The 41-year-old has a wealth of experience from his experience as part of the coaching staff at Manchester United.

He has since done a fine job at Middlesbrough, leading them to the Championship play-offs this season. Carrick took over Middlesbrough in October of last year, with the club sitting in 21st place in the league.

Nevertheless, Jordan does not believe Carrick would be suitable for a bigger job like Tottenham Hotspur yet.

When asked if Michael Carrick is ready for the move, Jordan told talkSPORT (June 1, 11 am): “Not really. He was part of a coaching set-up at Man United.

“He stepped in after Ole Gunnar Solskjaer got removed. But I don’t think he showed any credentials that could be of any use to Spurs at this stage.

“He’s done brilliantly well at Middlesbrough. But he’s got a lot more to learn. Taking the Tottenham job at this stage would be very difficult for him.”

Give it five years and Carrick could well be a perfect option for Tottenham Hotspur, but Jordan is right. At this moment in time, Carrick is showing plenty of promise but he needs to develop as a coach and earn his stripes.
