‘Quality player’ – Postecoglou delighted with Timo Werner’s showing against Brentford

Ange Postecoglou has praised Timo Werner after his impressive showing against Brentford and insisted that there is more to come from the German.

It is fair to say that not everyone was convinced by the club’s signing of Werner, given his previous struggles at Chelsea, but the early signs are that the 27-year-old is quite a natural fit for Postecoglou’s system at Spurs.

He showed against Brentford yesterday just why the Australian wanted to bring him to the club, troubling the Bees defence with his directness and pace all game.

Werner played a pivotal role in Tottenham’s fightback at the start of the second period, playing in Destiny Udogie for his equaliser before setting up Brennan Johnson’s goal minutes later with an inch-perfect low cross, which the Wales international tapped home from close range.

Postecoglou is impressed with Timo Werner so far

Postecoglou insisted that the on-loan RB Leipzig man will continue to get better as he gains a better understanding of the system and is confident that the forward will soon start delivering goals.

When asked what he thought of Werner’s display on Wednesday, the Tottenham head coach told Football.London: “I thought he was great. First half we probably didn’t support him enough in that left channel, he was a little bit isolated. Second half we got some better service to him.

“He’s a quality player, I think he’s proven at this level, and as he gets stronger and fitter and understands our game a little bit better, I think he’ll become even more effective and I know there’s goals in him as well that will come for Tottenham, so I thought he was good.”

Even against Man City, I thought Werner made some excellent runs but the likes of Kulusevski and Udogie refused to play him in quickly.  It was quite clear that Ange wanted the players to rectify that against Brentford and the former Chelsea man showed how difficult he can be to defend against in a one vs one situation.
