‘Quite lucrative’ – Finance expert discusses Spurs summer plans involving Son

Finance expert Dr Dan Plumley has said Tottenham will look to capitalise on Heung-min Son’s following during their potentially ‘lucrative’ pre-season tour of South Korea this summer.

Spurs confirmed the trip to Son’s homeland last week, which is set to be the club’s first international tour in two years as a result of the pandemic.

It is penned in to be the club’s third visit to South Korea, having taken part in the Peace Cup in 2005 and a promotional event in 2017.

The tour will re-open an avenue of income for Tottenham which was put on hold due to the pandemic and could provide a platform to boost interest in the club and Premier League football.

Plumley, a sports finance lecturer at Sheffield Hallam University, has praised Spurs for looking to capitalise on a growing market and believes they will use the popularity of star forward Son to their advantage.

He told Football Insider: “A number of things are thrown into the mix here. Overseas tours are a revenue stream that has been cut off for a couple of years because of Covid, and it was big pre-Covid.

“The big clubs are flying all over the world with these things. Asia has been one of the biggest markets. They can showcase their players there. With Tottenham and Son, you’re joining all those factors up.

“It can be quite lucrative despite the distance travelled. The other part of that is fan relations and reaching supporters in these territories. The league will be pushing it as well because of the broadcast deals that they are signing overseas.

“As much as it’s beneficial for Spurs, it’s also beneficial for the Premier League. You can see quite easily the financial logic behind this decision. And from Tottenham’s perspective, you have to make the most of the interest when you can.”

Spurs Web Opinion

Tottenham’s signing of Son in 2015 has proved to be an amazing decision both on and off the pitch. His performances have got better and better and he has managed to forge such a big fan base that has transitioned into supporting the club. The tour should bring a wealth of attention to him and Spurs which should be a big benefit down the line.
