With Tottenham Hotspur beefing up their backline with the additions of Marcos Senesi and Jan Paul van Hecke, Radu Dragusin was allowed to leave on loan to Fiorentina.
Signed in January 2024, the Romanian defender had to bide his time at Spurs and take opportunities as and when they come.
Despite this, there was no doubting his talent, which is one of the reasons why Fiorentina of Serie A signed him on loan with an obligation to buy – should certain conditions be met.
So, who is Radu Dragusin? What has been his Spurs part story? What needs to happen for him to leave the club permanently?
Radu Dragusin’s path to Spurs
Tottenham signed Radu Dragusin from Genoa in January 2024. The Romanian’s career had entirely played out in Italy until that point, with him coming through the ranks of Juventus.
He had played in youth squads in his native home, beginning with Sportul Studențesc, before then moving to Regal Sport București.
Interest soon grew in him, with the likes of Chelsea, Paris Saint-Germain and Atletico Madrid all keeping a close eye on him. He opted to move to Juventus however, where he wasted little time.
He was assigned as an U17 player coming in, but quickly stepped into the U19 team. His debut for the U23 side came in January 2020.
Later that year, he made his senior debut under Andrea Pirlo in the Champions League as Juve ran out 3-0 winners over Dynamo Kyiv. He started a first match in Coppa Italia and had, by all accounts, impressed. He earned a four-year contract extension in April 2021.
First-team football, though, was hard to come by in Turin, leading to a couple of loan spells for the 2021/22 season. the first was to Sampdoria, where he played a total of 15 times. This was then interrupted in January, with Dragusin sent to Salernitana instead. He only played seven times there.
The following season, Dragusin dropped down to Serie B with Genoa, with an option to buy contained in the deal. he was a regular there, playing 40 times and scoring four goals as Genoa earned promotion to Serie A.
The conditions for the option to buy to be triggered happened in January.
After an impressive start to life in Serie A, with Genoa going on to finish 11th, Dragusin had his suitors from far and wide – including Bayern Munich. He opted to join Tottenham, however, making him the most expensive Romanian footballer at the time.
How much is Radu Dragusin worth?
Radu Dragusin is worth around £13.7m according to Transfermarkt.
That’s below the circa £26m fee that Spurs paid for him, when signing him from Genoa. Still, they will almost be recouping their fee if he does end up being sold.
Should certain terms be bet, Fiorentina will then hand Spurs £21.4m to make Florence Dragusin’s permanent home.
A frustrating time in N17 for the Romanian
It was always going to be tough for Dragusin to break into the start line-up at Spurs, with Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven in front of him in the pecking order, and so it proved.
He never managed to establish himself as a first-time regular, filling in when others were rested or injured. Despite that, he always equipped himself well.
He made nine Premier League appearances when joining Spurs in 2024, before going on to make 16 the following season, while playing seven times in the Europa League.
Still, he was sent off in his Europa League debut, as Spurs won 3-0 against Qarabağ. That competition proved troublesome for Dragusin who injured his ACL against Elfsborg in a later fixture, ruling him out for the rest of the campaign.
Who knows how his time at Spurs may have gone without that injury?
Regardless, it meant a long recovery, with Dragusin returning in October 2025 to training and coming on a substitute to help close out Tottenham’s 1-0 win at Palace in their final fixture of the year.
He went on to make 10 appearances in total that season, but only got two minutes of action under Roberto De Zerbi, who favoured Micky van de Ven and Kevin Danso at the heart of defence instead.
A regular international already
Dragusin is already a regular fixture for his national team, and has amassed 30 caps for Romania since making his debut in March 2022.
Dragusin made his debut in a friendly against Greece over two years ago, returned to the Under-21 setup for six matches through the summer of 2022, and then was folded back into the senior squad at the end of that year.
He hasn’t looked back since.
Dragusin played a starring role for Romania at Euro 2024, earning praise from pundits throughout the tournament. Danny Murphy described his displays as “outstanding,” David Moyes named the Spurs man as one of the best defenders in the competition (The Times), and Ashley Williams commended the strength of the young centre-half (BBC).
He continued to be a regular later into 2024, playing through Romania’s Nations League campaign, where he scored his first goal for his country in a 3-0 win over Cyprus.
His ACL injury saw him miss a chunk of Romania’s World Cup qualifying campaign, but he returned as they lost out to Turkey in the play-offs.

Radu Dragusin is very tall, coming in at 1.91m high, and he weighs 85kg, making him a strong, imposing physical presence at the back.
He was born in Bucharest, Romani on February 3, 2002, making him 24-years-old at the time of writing. He got married to his partner, Ioana Stan, in January 2026.
