RB Leipzig player admits he was left ‘impressed’ by Mourinho in moment against Spurs

Tottenham Hotspur were knocked out of the Champions League last week by RB Leipzig, only for the competition to be put on hold due to the spread of the coronavirus.

Spurs were well beaten both home and away against the high-flying German side, losing 1-0 in North London and 3-0 in Leipzig.

Although a number of attacking players stole the headlines for Leipzig, such as Timo Werner and Marcel Sabitzer, left-back Angelino was a star in both legs.

The full-back is currently on loan from Manchester City and certainly looked up to the quality of the reigning Premier League champions against Spurs.

Angelino has since reflected on his team reaching the quarter-finals of the biggest competition in Europe, while also recalling an anecdote from the tie against Spurs.

He claims that he was left impressed by head coach Jose Mourinho when the Special One took the time to share a conversation and a joke with him during the first leg in North London.

He said (La Voz de Galicia): “The value of getting to quarters is the same. But it is true that the repercussions are not. Tottenham is a historic club in England and the fact that Mourinho is their coach, means they generate even more attention. In any case, sportingly, I consider the achievement to be enormous, whether in these or other circumstances.

“I don’t know if you’ll believe me, but it was the first time I was talking to him [Mourinho]. It’s an anecdote more than anything I’m living.

“It was in the first leg. There was a moment when the game was stopped and I hear them tell me something, I turn around and it was Mourinho. The first thing he told me I didn’t understand.

“Then he asked me if I was happy in Germany and if I already spoke German. And, of course, the answer came out of me: ‘What am I going to speak German! I don’t speak any’. He laughed and started talking to me in Portuguese.

“It was a few seconds, but I was impressed. I never thought I’d end up laughing with Mourinho in a Champions League game. I didn’t see that coming.”
