‘Ready for the next step’ – Club director makes admission about rumoured Spurs target

Ajax’s director of football Marc Overmars has admitted that rumoured Tottenham Hotspur target Andre Onana is ready to take the next step in his career and could leave the Eredivisie giants this summer.

Onana’s performances between the sticks for Ajax over the last couple of seasons have made him a wanted man across the continent.

Spurs are one of the clubs said to be targeting a move for the Cameroonian international as they look to bring in a long-term replacement for Hugo Lloris (The Sun).

Chelsea are reportedly ready to push Spurs for the 24-year-old’s signature this summer (Express).

Onana admitted back in April that he wanted to leave the Johan Cruijff Arena in search of a new challenge (AD).

However, The Daily Mail has since reported that the goalkeeper may decide to stay at the club for one more season due to the uncertainty surrounding transfers in the post-COVID market.

Speaking about Onana, Overmars has now told Ajax TV: “He meets our standards: he has won prizes, has gotten better and is ready for the next step.

“But I really can’t rule out that he will stay another year.”

Spurs Web Opinion

I would be extremely surprised if we signed a potential number one this summer. It is not a position that is a priority for us, with Hugo still seemingly having at least a couple of years left in him at the top level.

I suspect next summer is when we will aggressively go after a potential number one, although that might change if Lloris does well next season.
