Real Madrid legend talks up English clubs’ chances of winning Champions League

Spanish giants Real Madrid and Barcelona have been extremely dominant in the UEFA Champions League for the last decade or so.

In fact, seven of the last 10 titles have been won by the two La Liga sides, out of which Madrid have won 4 of the last 5 competitions.

However, with both clubs looking like they are in a transitional phase this season, the English clubs have a great chance to go all the way.

Spurs already have one foot in the quarter finals after thrashing Bundesliga leaders Borussia Dortmund 3-0 last Wednesday while Liverpool and Man City both going in as favourites for their round of 16 ties against Bayern Munich and Schalke respectively.

However Manchester United seem to have their work cut out in order to qualify for the last 8 after they were beaten comprehensively by PSG at Old Trafford last Tuesday.

Former Real Madrid and Barcelona winger Luis Figo has said that the English clubs have made up ground on the Spanish giants and that they are capable of winning the competition.

Speaking to Sports Mole, the former Portuguese captain said, “Looking at the last editions it has been the prosperity of the Spanish teams, but I think the English teams have very good quality.

“They have a very good league and I think the gap is not so big, especially as you can have a good day or not a good day in a semi or quarter-final which could decide a season.”
