‘Really like his general demeanour’ – Postecoglou praises young Tottenham star

Ange Postecoglou has lavished praise on Pape Matar Sarr for his attributes as a footballer and also for his attitude in training, backing the youngster to continue getting better over the next few years.

Sarr found game time hard to come by under Antonio Conte last season. Even when the 21-year-old came into the starting eleven and impressed against AC Milan in the Champions League, he went back to being a bench warmer when everyone was fit, with the Italian seemingly not trusting him.

However, Postecoglou has done just the opposite, showing enormous faith in the Sarr from day one and the Senegalese international is repaying him, having been one of Tottenham’s most consistent performers this season.

Pape Matar Sarr is very popular at Tottenham

The Tottenham head coach pointed out that the former Metz man is very much a modern-day midfielder, thanks to his well-rounded skillset and revealed that the youngster is an extremely popular figure in the Spurs changing room.

Postecoglou said about Sarr (via Football.London): “Pape has a super energy about him. Every day he trains with a smile on his face but he works damn hard. I think he’s a really exciting footballer. He’s one of these midfielders you need these days, he’s very dynamic, he covers the ground really well, defensively and offensively.

“He gets into the box, he’s scored a couple of goals for us this year. His technical ability is strong and he’s a good ball carrier as well, and he’s still young.

“He’s another one who I feel there is so much more growth in, in all aspects. I just really like his general demeanour. He feels like he’s been blessed to have this opportunity and he’s going to do everything to make the most out of it.

“It’s great to have him as part of the group He’s very popular within the group because of his nature, but he’s a hell of a footballer. I’ve got a lot of time for Pape and he’s another one where there’s just a lot of growth there from what I see.”

Spurs Web Opinion

Sarr is still quite young and nowhere near his ceiling yet. While the midfielder’s engine is perhaps his standout attribute, he clearly does not have any glaring weaknesses in his game. I am excited to see how the 21-year-old will develop over the next year or two.
