‘Really tiring’ – 25-year-old opens up on intense Spurs schedule

Tottenham Hotspur’s Rodrigo Bentancur has commented on the busy schedule for the club ahead of the World Cup, but insists the team must get past the fatigue and keep winning games.

With the World Cup taking place in Qatar next month, the fixture lists of leagues across the world have been shaken up and condensed to accommodate a winter tournament as opposed to the standard summer schedule.

Due to this, Spurs, just like any club taking part in European competitions, are playing at least twice a week, every week. The Tottenham fixture list is hectic, to say the least, which becomes even more of an issue when players pick up injuries.

It’s been a particularly intense campaign for Bentancur so far, with the Uruguayan midfielder missing just one game for Spurs (Transfermarkt) – the league game against West Ham.

Speaking in the Tottenham matchday programme ahead of the game against Newcastle on Sunday (via Football.London), Bentancur admitted the schedule is tiring and revealed how the squad are coping with it.

He said: “It’s true that it can be really tiring, particularly when you have to play two or three away matches in a row – you get one day at home, and then you’re off again.

“At the moment, matches have practically replaced training for us because we can’t do much between times apart from recovery work.

“Of course, after an international break, it can be difficult to get back into the swing of things with your club after all the travel.

“I think perhaps that showed, but we were quickly able to turn those results around, and what matters now is continuing to win games.”

Spurs Web Opinion

It sure is a busy season this year, and the intensity of fixtures does appear to be taking its toll on the Spurs players who look a little more lethargic than you’d like to see. Hopefully, we can just get through this period, get the World Cup out of the way, and then hit our stride in the New Year.
