‘Really top tonight’ – Conte reacts to Emerson Royal performance and goal

Antonio Conte spoke about Emerson Royal’s performance last night after he scored his first Tottenham goal and put in a solid performance.

Emerson has split opinions within the Tottenham fanbase since arriving in North London, but yesterday he proved the doubters wrong with a quality performance and a goal, albeit a fortunate one.

The Brazilian didn’t put a foot wrong all match and improved upon what he has been struggling at, such as putting in poor crosses and getting caught too far up the pitch when needed in defence.

Those are the things that have had some people questioning him so it is brilliant to see him doing better in those areas. Conte defended Emerson from the criticism and said how the goal will help him moving forward.

He said (Football London): “He needed that [goal]. His performance was really top tonight. Don’t forget Emerson is only 22 years old. To come here and play in another league is not simple. To score a goal is important for his confidence.”

Spurs Web Opinion:

Conte is certainly right with what he said. People forget how difficult it is for players to adapt to the Premier League and it takes some longer than others.

Yes, there is no debate as to whether Emerson has got off to the best start in England but people mustn’t forget it is only a start, and he has played just 24 games (TransferMarkt). So the time he has got to prove himself is immense.

On top of that, Emerson has had to learn a new language and change to a right wing-back role. So people should think about the changes he has had to go through before disregarding him as being the level Tottenham need.
