‘Really turned it on’ – Pundit left impressed by £27m Spurs man this season

Former Liverpool defender Phil Thompson believes winger Steven Bergwijn has ‘really turned it on’ during Tottenham’s perfect start to the season.

Spurs have won each of their first three games to open their Premier League campaign, beating Manchester City, Wolverhampton Wanderers and Watford all by a score of 1-0.

Since joining this summer, Spurs head coach Nuno Espirito Santo has been working on implementing his own methods, the same techniques that made Wolves a tough team to play against during his time in the West Midlands.

Nuno has elected to deploy a front three, with Bergwijn being a key element in his attacking patterns so far.

The Dutchman has struggled to adapt since making the move to north London in early 2020 for £27m, but has looked in good form since Nuno’s arrival at the club.

Despite not appearing on the scoresheet yet this season, Thompson has been impressed with Bergwijn’s performances this early on into proceedings.

Speaking on the Where’s Jeff? Podcast, he said: “I’ll tell you a player who has impressed me quite a little bit, is Bergwijn. He’s looking like the player Spurs thought they were getting. His performances these first three games, he’s really turned it on.”

There is an electric player in Bergwijn which we haven’t seen for the majority of his time in a Spurs shirt. He has demonstrated it at times, but not much, especially under the reign of Jose Mourinho. But he looks reinvigorated this seasoning and very threatening going forward, especially on the counter-attack with Heung-min Son.
