Redknapp admits Dawson wasn’t his first choice

Harry Redknapp has admitted that Michael Dawson was not in his initial plans when he took over at Tottenham, but gave his backing to calls for the Spurs captain to go to the World Cup with England.

Dawson has been in exceptional form this season at the back for Spurs, with recent performances against Arsenal and Chelsea earning rave reviews and calls for his inclusion in Fabio Capello’s World Cup squad.

But Redknapp has claimed he was not due to be his first choice upon taking the reins at Spurs, but circumstances have been kind to Dawson.

“I’d have been a liar if I’d stood and said Dawson would have been in my team. I had Jonathan Woodgate and Ledley King, who I thought were as good as any pair in the country.

“But Michael has been absolutely brilliant. You couldn’t go wrong with him in the World Cup squad.”
