Harry Redknapp has admitted that Michael Dawson was not in his initial plans when he took over at Tottenham, but gave his backing to calls for the Spurs captain to go to the World Cup with England.

Dawson has been in exceptional form this season at the back for Spurs, with recent performances against Arsenal and Chelsea earning rave reviews and calls for his inclusion in Fabio Capello’s World Cup squad.

But Redknapp has claimed he was not due to be his first choice upon taking the reins at Spurs, but circumstances have been kind to Dawson.

“I’d have been a liar if I’d stood and said Dawson would have been in my team. I had Jonathan Woodgate and Ledley King, who I thought were as good as any pair in the country.

“But Michael has been absolutely brilliant. You couldn’t go wrong with him in the World Cup squad.”

  1. Just a little bit of a twisting of words to try and create a story. As usual, websites and papers trying to drive traffic to their profit by trying to start rumours and create problems where there aren't any… Still, I guess this is what we have to get used to now that we're 'big news' again.

  2. Arry was being honest- but I fancy Dawson would have run Woodgate & King close- especially last year I felt Dawson was improving immensely so much so: he should have come on last year against Blackburn and Samba- who OWNED KING & WOODGATE- who wouldn’t have owned Dawson. Anyway Dawson is the future, fresh captain and a clear winner and improving leader who inspires confidence at the back- just listen to Gomes, and see stats when Dawson’s not playing. I can’t believe I am praising Daws- 2years ago I thought he would make grade- he appeared too nervy against pace, and without King- but he is awesome NOW- especially as Arry had him down as 4th choice. But now he would be 1st even if King or Woodgate is fit.
