Redknapp claims ‘there is every chance’ of Conte’s claim of Spurs star coming true

Harry Redknapp has said that Eric Dier has all the attributes to become one of the best centre-backs in the Premier League.

Dier has been a man transformed since Antonio Conte’s appointment, with the defender making the central sweeper role in the Italian’s back three his own.

The 27-year-old has been a player who has split opinions among Spurs fans in the past but he now looks to be coming into his own in the new system.

Not only has the England international been solid defensively but he has also demonstrated his ability on the ball over recent weeks, playing some inch-perfect long passes over the top of the opposition backline for Tottenham’s attackers and wing-backs.

Conte said this week that Dier has the ability to become of the best central defenders in the world and Redknapp believes that the 52-year-old’s words will boost the Tottenham defender’s confidence.

When asked about Conte’s words regarding Dier, the former Spurs manager told talkSPORT: “That should give you all the confidence in the whole world. He seems to have settled into that centre-half position.

“He chopped and change, midfield and centre-half. But he obviously has outstanding ability to be able to play in both positions anyway.

“He played in midfield for England for a spell at the back, he looks comfortable, at the moment.

“And there is every chance he could become a top, top centre-back. He is already a good one, that’s for sure.”

Spurs Web Opinion

For me, Dier has always been a more natural centre-back than a defensive midfielder.

He played as a centre-back throughout his youth career and while he initially did well in midfield under Pochettino, his change of position has arguably hampered his development as a defender.

I am glad to see the 27-year-old putting in the performances he has this season as I always believed he had all the attributes to be a top centre-back.
