Redknapp claims Tottenham should try to sign West Ham player this summer

Jamie Redknapp has urged Tottenham Hotspur to try and sign West Ham star Declan Rice, after it emerged London rivals Arsenal were keen on the midfielder.

Rice was initially part of Chelsea’s academy before joining up with West Ham in 2013. He has since gone on to become one of the best midfielders in the Premier League and a mainstay in the England national team.

He has amassed 238 appearances for the Hammers through the years, registering 14 goals and 13 assists (Transfermarkt).

The 24-year-old has been West Ham captain since Mark Noble’s retirement at the end of last season, but his time at the club may be coming to an end.

His current contract expires at the end of next season, and Rice has recently been linked with a move to Arsenal (Independent).

Chelsea have also been mooted as a possible destination for Rice in the past (Football.London).

Now, Sky Sports pundit Redknapp has told Football.London that Tottenham should be making a move for the talented midfielder too.

However, he doesn’t see the club getting involved in the battle with Arsenal for his signature.

He said: “Declan Rice is available. Now, Arsenal are in the mix, why can’t Spurs be in the mix?

“That’s the sort of level of player they need to be trying to acquire.

“That’s what they should be doing right now but I just don’t think that’ll happen.”

We could and should be at least speaking to Rice and trying to snap him up, but I highly doubt we will.

At the end of the day, he’s the kind of player that will be wanting Champions League football if he’s going to leave West Ham and we just can’t offer that right now.

It will be a shame to see him go to Arsenal if that does happen, as that will make them exponentially stronger and be exactly the kind of symbol of ambition that we should be striving to display.
