Redknapp happy to end curse of Bale

Harry Redknapp has backed Gareth Bale to prove his ability to the Premier League after ending his winless streak in last weekend’s thumping of Burnley.

Since arriving at the club in 2007, Bale had failed to be part of a winning Tottenham side, but his appearance in the latter stages against the Clarets finally put an end to the hoodoo.

“That’s why I put him on,” said Redknapp. “I thought we needed to break that hoodoo. It’s affected him I think, but he played well in the Carling Cup match before.

“He’s a left-back really and he could be a top player.”

Bale has had problems with injuries since joining Spurs from Southampton and now must attempt to dislodge Benoit Assou-Ekotto from the left-back spot in the team, who has improved dramatically in the past 12 months and has impressed the manager.

“We have a great left-back in Assou-Ekotto. He’s a terrific player, he’s quick, he’s a great passer. He whips it into feet and he has it all to be a top player.”
