Harry Redknapp has backed Gareth Bale to prove his ability to the Premier League after ending his winless streak in last weekend’s thumping of Burnley.

Since arriving at the club in 2007, Bale had failed to be part of a winning Tottenham side, but his appearance in the latter stages against the Clarets finally put an end to the hoodoo.

“That’s why I put him on,” said Redknapp. “I thought we needed to break that hoodoo. It’s affected him I think, but he played well in the Carling Cup match before.

“He’s a left-back really and he could be a top player.”

Bale has had problems with injuries since joining Spurs from Southampton and now must attempt to dislodge Benoit Assou-Ekotto from the left-back spot in the team, who has improved dramatically in the past 12 months and has impressed the manager.

“We have a great left-back in Assou-Ekotto. He’s a terrific player, he’s quick, he’s a great passer. He whips it into feet and he has it all to be a top player.”

  1. Im not sure who is better defensively, possible BAE

but Bale is better attacking and supporting the left Mid
Hopefully Bale can get some more games now the curse is over

  2. BAE is definitely the better defender. Bale will have to fight hard but I fear his days at WHL are numbered. He’ll go down as another one of those highly-rated players to have their careers ruined at spurs. Now that’s a hoodoo!

  3. Alan this lad wont have is career ruined fergie wanted him to replace Giggs and sent him to persuade him to go Man UTD but he chose spurs. When he is injury free he offers more than Ekotto and there tackling is the same both have a tendency to get turned on the edge of the box but Bale is only just 20 and with is injury's not the finished article yet but will push ekoto of his perch and show us spurs fans why we would have paid 10 million for a young lad he could be our best buy at 5 million early payment to southampton desperate for money

  4. I thought the curse of Bale was that Spurs has never won a match when he has started the game.
So in reality the curse is still there.
