Redknapp highlights the position Conte ‘will want to strengthen’ next at Spurs

Former Tottenham Hotspur player and Sky Sports pundit Jamie Redknapp has highlighted the area of Antonio Conte’s squad that still needs strengthening.

Spurs have enjoyed a fine start to the campaign, and currently sit third in the Premier League table after seven matches. The North London club maintained their unbeaten run in the league after a 6-2 win against Leicester City at the weekend.

Tottenham had a busy summer, bringing in seven new faces to add quality in depth to the Spurs squad. The benefits of this are clear already, with Spurs now capable of changing games with the players they can send on from the bench.

One area in particular that Spurs worked on over the summer is the wing-back position, with Ivan Perisic and Djed Spence coming in. As we know, the wing-back role is a key component of Conte’s tactical system.

According to Redknapp though, the Tottenham squad is still lacking in this aspect, and Conte should be looking to improve this area of his team. Appearing on Sky Sports (17/09/2022, 17:00) for the Tottenham versus Leicester game, Redknapp said:

“He’ll just be hoping all his players come back [fit] from international duty, huge game against Arsenal coming up. But Spurs do look very good, the options they’ve got off the bench and the players that are starting going forward are just a joke.

“I only worry about the wing-back areas, I’m sure that’s an area he will want to strengthen given time. But so much to look forward to for Tottenham at the moment.”

I think Tottenham are looking good on the left-hand side, with Ivan Perisic and Ryan Sessegnon in rotation and Destiny Udogie to arrive next year. The right-wing-back role is a totally different story though.

Emerson Royal is not good enough, Matt Doherty is still finding fitness, and Djed Spence is inexperienced at this level. I’d be keen to see Royal shipped out in January and a top-class right wing-back option brought in who can step into the starting line-up instantly.
