Redknapp highlights what Mourinho must do to stop Spurs’ significant backwards step

Harry Redknapp believes that Jose Mourinho faces a tough job to reverse Tottenham Hotspur’s fortunes.

Former Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino helped to transform the club on the field in his five and a half year spell in North London where he helped his side to qualify for the Champions League in four successive seasons whilst also making an appearance in last season’s final.

The Argentine experienced a difficult start to the new season which saw them drop down to fourteenth in the Premier League table whilst also suffering humiliation at both ends of the footballing spectrum at the hands of Bayern Munich and Colchester United.

Despite seeing an improvement in results following his appointment in late November when he replaced Pochettino, Mourinho has suffered a number of injury problems along with a lack of form in recent weeks that saw his side eliminated from both the FA Cup and Champions League in the space of a week.

Redknapp claimed that Spurs have gone backwards in their progress over the past year and must look to recruit wisely to get the club back on track.

He told Sky Sports News: “They’ve got a bit of work to do to get back to where they were a few years ago.

“The last year or so they have gone backwards quite a way in all honesty – Jose has a big job to do in the summer.

“He needs some good recruitment, a couple of new players and see where they go next year.”
