Redknapp hopeful of new defender deal

Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp wants to reward injury-prone defender Jonathan Woodgate with a new contract in the summer.

The central defender has battled back from a career-threatening injury after after 15 months out with a groin strain and came off the bench to feature in the 1-0 win against AC Milan.

“Hopefully he will (get a deal),” Redknapp said. “I want him to come back fit. He’s a great player.

“I would love to see him get his career back on track because when I came here two years ago he was one of the first names on the sheet, a different class. He is one of the best centre-backs around.”
