Redknapp insists Spurs midfield man is ‘as good as any player in the league’

Former Spurs and Liverpool midfielder Jamie Redknapp has spoken extremely highly of Dele Alli’s talent and has said that the midfielder is as good as in any in the division when he is fit and on-form.

After a fantastic first couple of seasons at Tottenham, Dele’s form levelled off, partially due to injury problems. The 23-year-old came in for much criticism and even lost his place in the England side earlier in the season.

However, since regaining fitness, the former MK Dons star has once again shown glimpses of his best form in the past few months.

He was arguably one of Tottenham’s best players in the first few games under Jose Mourinho but he hasn’t been able to maintain the same standards over some more recent games.

Redknapp feels that the inconsistency is to be expected given the injury problems that Dele is recovering from. He insisted that he is an extremely dangerous option to have in the side when he is making that trademark runs from deep.

Football.London quotes the Sky Sports pundit as saying, “He (Dele) had a horrendous injury, tore his hamstring badly, missed four or five months of the season so it’s taken time.

“You can see his fitness levels, he’s looking sharper and the disappointing thing for him will be Harry Kane being injured, they used to link up so well a few years ago.

“When he runs from deep he’s as good as any other midfield player because he knows where the goal is.”

It is simply unrealistic to expect Dele to get the same number of goals or assists as he did in his first two seasons as his role in the side as changed. While Mourinho initially played him really close to Kane, he has been deployed in a slightly more withdrawn role in midfield since the striker’s injury. He has still been one of our better players in the last few weeks.
