Redknapp: Spurs can still challenge for the title

Harry Redknapp

Harry Redknapp has reiterated his belief that Tottenham are title contenders.

10 man Spurs beat Aston Villa 2-1 on Boxing Day and Redknapp still believes that the club can contend for the Premier League crown.

“I’ve not changed my mind,” insisted Redknapp after being asked whether he maintained his view on his side’s title aspirations.

He then immediately added: “But we are massive outsiders – 33-1 or whatever – and that’s about right I suppose.

“I keep saying it’s open this season, and it’s not impossible. You have got to believe you can achieve something.

“It’s there for someone to have a real crack at it this season as there is very little between the top five or six teams.

“We’re playing as well as anybody, and we’ve people who could get in any team – (Gareth) Bale, (Luka) Modric, (Rafael) van der Vaart.

“We’ve some quality players throughout the team. We’ve a good squad.

“The main aim is obviously to get into that top four again, to get back into the Champions League.

“But if you have a good run, you don’t know where it can take you. It’s happened before.”

Have something to tell us about this article?

  1. Unhappily there is no chance an imbalanced team which starts every game with the handicap of one goal against it to win the championship. Have a look at the goal difference of the teams about us. They are trying to fool the supporters in order not to buy the proper players.

    • Stupid comment IONAX. Spurs have constantly spent money over past 5 years or so to bring us more success than what we have had league wise in many a year. We finished top 4, we are in last 16 of champs league. The players you talk about being "proper players" are all going to be courted by the rich league of clubs, with bank balances that Spurs have no hope of competing with. Do you really feel we could, or should, pay £200k p/w for a Tevez or a Villa. Unless a Sheik or Russian Billionaire comes knocking on Mr Levy's door, we must manage within our limits. We do not have the resources to have the wage structure needed to compete with Man City/Utd, Chelsea, Madrid, Milan, Barca etc. I am proud of Spurs, I am proud of Bale and VDV being spoken of in such high regard. We need to trust the club, they have done a great job in getting us competing with the big boys. Spurs are a force again, and Harry is right, we are in there fighting, and if we only finish 5th, so be it, that is football, and it won't be for the lack of trying, or the lack of ambition on anyones level. If you really support Spurs, or even football, you wouldn't make such outlandish statements, you would get behind the boys, manager, owners and support your team in what could be a great 2nd half of the 2010/11 season. Happy new year and COYS.
