Some Spurs fans on social media were left dismayed when they heard that Mike Dean had been appointed as the man in the middle for Tottenham’s game against Newcastle United last week.
Unfortunately, their worst fears came true when Dean refused to award a penalty when Harry Kane seemed to be clearly fouled by Jamaal Lascelles in the second half.
According to The Daily Mirror, Martin Atkinson has been appointed as the referee for the all-important North London Derby this weekend.
Atkinson is no stranger to North London derbies having officiated several high scoring encounters between the sides including the 4-4 draw in 2008 and the 3-3 draw three years later.
The official certainly hasn’t been shy of pointing to the penalty spot in those occasions and will now on VAR to rely on as well.
Both sides come into the game on the back of defeats but a win in this game would no doubt completely turn around the atmosphere at either club and give them momentum and belief going into the rest of the season.

Arsenal’s backline is their biggest weakness as Liverpool proved at Anfield and so it is important that Spurs have a go at the hosts and don’t just absorb pressure like the did against City.
The likes of Son Heung-Min and Lucas Moura will have more space to run into than they did against Newcastle and hopefully, that will be enough to see Pochettino’s men come away with the points.
