Reliable journalist reveals the position which Jose Mourinho wants to strengthen

Tottenham’s poor defensive record this season has continued to persist since Jose Mourinho’s arrival in November.

The likes of Jan Vertonghen and Toby Alderweireld have both looked a shadow of the players they were in previous years and most Spurs fans will be hoping their drop in form is temporary rather than a sign of things to come.

Vertonghen’s future is still very much up in the air, with the centre-back’s deal coming to end in the summer.

The long-serving defender has admitted that he is yet to make a decision on his future (Sporza via Sport Witness) but reports indicate that he is on his way out of North London (Football Insider).

Even if Vertonghen does leave, Mourinho has other centre-back options at his disposal in the form of Alderweireld, Eric Dier, Davinson Sanchez, Juan Foyth and Japhet Tanganga.

However, Sky Sport Italia transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has now confirmed that the Spurs boss wants to sign another central defender.

When asked by a fan if he has any transfer updates about the Lilywhites, Romano said on Instagram: “Soon! Jose wants a new CB”

It will be really interesting to see which central defender we go for considering we don’t have much money to spend. I fear we might go for Chris Smalling as he is available for a reduced fee. I don’t think the Manchester United man is the answer to our problems at the back.
