Report: 17-year-old picks Spurs over Barcelona on deadline day

In a late twist on transfer deadline day, Swedish prodigy Lucas Bergvall has opted to move to Tottenham Hotspur instead of Barcelona. The 17-year-old will fly to London to sign his contract, before remaining in Sweden until the end of the season.

It seems Tottenham are done signing first-team ready players in this winter window, but the North London club is set to complete the acquisition of Djurgardens’ talented young midfielder Lucas Bergvall before the deadline tonight.

This week, it emerged that both Spurs and Barcelona were fighting it out for the wonderkid, with the player having visited both clubs over the last few days (Expressen).

According to Fabrizio Romano on Tuesday, it was the Catalan club who were most confident of sealing the deal with Bergvall, though the Lilywhites were not giving up and were in contact with the player’s representatives.

Despite Barcelona’s assured advances, it is believed Spurs had made Bergvall a promise that he would go straight into Ange Postecoglou‘s first-team set up (Mundo Deportivo).

Lucas Bergvall picks Tottenham

Whatever Tottenham did, it has worked, as the latest from The Athletic reveals Bergvall has picked the Premier League side as his next club, rejecting Barcelona in the process.

In what is described as a “stunning coup” for Spurs, they have managed to tie down one of the “most coveted prospects” in Europe. It is thought Johan Lange led the pursuit and “managed to convince” the youngster to sign for Tottenham.

A “fixed fee of approaching €10m (£8.5m, $10.9m) plus add-ons” has been agreed for Bergvall, who will fly to London tomorrow, which is actually his 18th birthday. He will sign a five-year deal with Spurs, but will remain with his current club on loan until the end of this season.

In addition to this report, Fabrizio Romano has also given the move his ‘Here we go’ announcement, revealing Bergvall’s representatives have informed Barcelona of his decision.

This is a huge signal of intent from the club, and it’s very exciting to know that yet again we have beaten one of Europe’s elite clubs to the signing of a top young talent. I can’t wait to see him play for Spurs next season.
