Report: 19-year-old defender wanted by Spurs expected to leave club

If the latest reports from Portugal are to be believed, rumoured Tottenham Hotspur target Tomas Tavares is set for an exit from Benfica before the transfer window shuts.

Tottenham have secured the capture of a right-back already this transfer window in the form of Matt Doherty but reports indicate that the club could cash in on Serge Aurier this summer (The Athletic’s David Ornstein).

That would leave Spurs without a natural back-up for Doherty at right-back, with Gedson Fernandes being asked to play in the position during pre-season.

The Sunday People (23/8; page 58) claimed that Spurs had identified Tevarnes as a target after his impressive breakthrough season in the Liga NOS last time out, while A Bola suggested at the end of last month that Benfica could loan out the 19-year-old.

Record now claims that the defender has asked to leave the Portuguese giants and is likely to get his wish before the transfer window shuts.

The report reveals that the teenager is currently training with the reserves until he gets his move, with Taveres reportedly wanting to test himself in a harder league.

Spurs Web Opinion

Given that Mourinho has spelt out clearly on multiple occasions that he wants two players in each position, I would be extremely surprised if we were to let Aurier leave without signing another right-back. So, I would not rule out us potentially signing a young talent like Taverns to serve as Doherty’s understudy. Perhaps a loan deal with an option to buy is on the cards, like the Gedson Fernandes move.
