Report: 23-year-old Spurs target is one of Conte’s ‘obsessions’ and would ‘fit like a glove’

O Jogo have now revealed that while Tottenham want to sign Sporting Libson pair Pedro Porro and Marcus Edwards during the current transfer window, the Premier League club are not willing to pay the fee that the Portuguese club are demanding for the latter.

It was The Daily Mail that first reported earlier this week that Tottenham could also look to re-sign Edwards from Sporting along with Porro.

This was subsequently dismissed by Football.London’s Alasdair Gold, who revealed on Thursday that reports of Spurs’ interest in the 24-year-old are wide of the mark.

However, O Jogo have now backed up The Mail’s claim, explaining that Antonio Conte’s men are exploring a deal for Edwards along with their well-documented pursuit of Porro.

The report adds that while the right-back is at the top of the Tottenham head coach’s wishlist, the winger is seen as less of a priority.

It is suggested that if the club find it too expensive to sign both players, they would likely prioritise a move for the Spaniard. This is because Porro has been one of Conte’s ‘obsessions’ as his characteristics ‘fit like a glove’ in the Italian’s system.

O Jogo also add that despite Spurs having a 50 per cent sell-on clause for Edwards, they still find the €30m (£26.4m) fee they would have to pay for the winger to be ‘excessive’.

Spurs Web Opinion

It does seem like Tottenham will get the deal for Porro over the line as long as another big club does not suddenly enter the race for the right-back over the coming days.

I suspect that if Spurs did hold an interest in Edwards, Gil’s performance against Palace would have got the club to reconsider their pursuit of the Sporting attacker, given that both players are extremely similar.
