Report: £23m man who Spurs let walk away for free is set to sign three-year deal

Foot Mercato journalist, Santi Aouna has revealed on Twitter that Serge Aurier is set to undergo a medical today with Villarreal ahead of completing a free transfer.

Tottenham were not able to find a buyer for Aurier during the summer transfer window and the North London club subsequently reached a mutual agreement with the Ivory Coast international to terminate his contract.

While the 28-year-old did show glimpses of his quality during his four-year spell in North London, he had more than his fair share of defensive lapses, which are what some Spurs fans will remember him for.

Emerson Royal, who has brought in as Aurier’s replacement in the summer, has not quite hit the ground running at N17 but Nuno Espirito Santo’s men will be hoping that the Brazilian builds on his impressive showing against Aston Villa yesterday afternoon.

Aouna has now taken to social media to report that Aurier, who cost Spurs £23million in 2017 (BBC) is set to pen a three-year contract with Villarreal.

The journalist also revealed that Unai Emery was an important factor in the right-backs’ decision, with Aurier said to have held constructive discussions with the former Arsenal boss about joining the La Liga side.

Spurs Web Opinion

I believe it was the right time for Spurs and Aurier to part ways as the 28-year-old looked in need of a new challenge. I always thought Aurier was better than he was given credit for during his time at Spurs and I fully expect him to be a big asset for Villarreal.
