Report: 25-year-old La Liga man turned down Spurs move in the summer

Marca have revealed that Real Madrid winger Marco Asensio turned down the chance to join Tottenham Hotspur in the summer.

Asensio was rumoured to be on Tottenham’s radar during the summer transfer window but the move did not materialise, with Spurs eventually strengthening their wide areas through the acquisition of Bryan Gil from Sevilla.

Some sources have suggested that the North London club could reignite their interest in the Spanish international in January, with Madrid allegedly valuing him at around €50m (£43m).

Asensio certainly proved his worth to Carlo Ancelotti on Friday, netting a hat-trick in Los Blancos’ 6-1 thrashing of Mallorca.

Marca have now revealed that the 25-year-old decided to stay put at the Santiago Bernabeu over the summer and fight for his place despite having several options.

It is alleged that Spurs, as well as AC Milan were ‘very interested’ in Asensio, with the Lilywhites desiring to make him their ‘star signing’.

Spurs Web Opinion

A lot can change from now until January, both in terms of Tottenham’s priorities and Asensio’s situation at Real. However, I certainly do not think we should be investing big money into another wide player before addressing our issues in central midfield.
