Edwards has been linked with Spurs on and off ever since he left the club during Mauricio Pochettino’s reign, but the links this summer seem to be more concrete than ever.

Even the ever-reliable Alasdair Gold confirmed recently that Spurs are looking at their former academy graduate this summer, particularly as they struggle to fill homegrown slots for next season.

Now, O Jogo provide an update on the situation, stating that Spurs are continuing to look at Edwards, but Ruben Amorim may not be as sad to see him go as he once would have been.

The report claims that Amorim has not been happy with Edwards’ recent form at Sporting, which is why he has dropped to the bench on more than one occasion this season.

It is said that even his minutes on the pitch have not been enough to impress Amorim enough to earn his spot back in the starting XI, which could make a transfer a little easier this summer.

However, that begs the question, even with Tottenham’s 35 per cent discount, is it worth paying a transfer fee for a player who can’t even make it into a Portuguese league starting XI?

I don’t believe in transfers for the sake of transfers. I would much rather promote an U21 player than shell out £10m for Edwards just because he counts as homegrown.

Tottenham should think bigger if they want to sign English players this summer – like Conor Gallagher and Eberechi Eze, for example.
