Report: 29-year-old has told friends that he is ‘keen to join Tottenham’

Football Insider have reported that Sam Johnstone has told his friends he is keen to join Tottenham Hotspur this summer.

Johnstone’s current contract with the Baggies runs out at the end of the season and West Brom boss Steve Bruce has hinted the goalkeeper has played his final game for the Championship club (BBC Sport).

Despite interest from Manchester United, Tottenham are reportedly increasingly confident of winning the race for the England international, who they want as Hugo Lloris’ understudy next season (The Sun).

Football Insider have now claimed Johnstone has expressed to his friends that he is keen on a move to the North London club.

It is said that the 29-year-old has told his inner circle that he would be willing to join Spurs and initially serve as Lloris’ understudy. The report adds that Johnstone believes he could eventually succeed the Frenchman as Tottenham’s number one.

With Gollini looking likely to return to Italy at the end of his loan spell, Johnstone is arguably the best option we can sign a Lloris understudy, given that the 29-year-old is available on a free transfer and has Premier League experience.

Even if the England international does not prove to be the long-term Lloris’ replacement that Spurs hope for, the signing entails no risk for the club.
