Report: 41-year-old emerges as shock new lead contender for Spurs job

De Telegraaf have now claimed that Bayer Leverkusen boss Xabi Alonso has now emerged as the top contender to replace Antonio Conte at Tottenham Hotspur.

Alonso has won many admirers since taking over at the BayArena back in October of last year.

Leverkusen were near the relegation zone when he arrived but they are now in contention for European qualification and are in the semi-final of the Europa League.

According to De Telegraaf, the work that Alonso has done in Germany has now shot him to the top of Tottenham’s list.

The publication also touches on Spurs’ interest in Arne Slot but explains that the Dutchman’s lack of experience in a top competition would count against his candidacy.

It is asserted that Alonso’s extensive experience as a player at top clubs such as Liverpool, Real Madrid and Bayern Munich, makes him a more attractive candidate for Tottenham than the Feyenoord boss.

Alonso’s style of play would suit the characteristics of the current Spurs squad better than the other candidates who have been linked with the job as he is a fan of the 3-4-3 system.

However, the Spaniard is quite pragmatic in his approach and not the ideal guy to turn to if Tottenham’s priority is to return to a possession-based, high-pressing style of play.
