Report: £50m-rated Spurs target said he was flattered by Mourinho interest in the past

The Daily Mail reported this week that Jose Mourinho has reportedly made it clear to Tottenham’s hierarchy that he wants Lazio star Sergej Milinkovic-Savic signed this summer.

Milinkovic-Savic has been on Tottenham’s radar for the best part of two years (Mirror) and the report in the Daily Mail revealed that Mourinho too was a long-term admirer.

It was claimed that the £50 million-rated Lazio star, who was also interesting PSG, was Mourinho’s prefered candidate to replace Paul Pogba at Old Trafford during his time there.

It looks as if there is some evidence for that assertion as the Mirror reported back in October 2018 that the Spurs boss watched Milinkovic-Savic in action against Montenegro in the UEFA Nations’ League.

The 25-year-old player admitted at the time that he was flattered to have the Portuguese coach come to watch him in action.

The Lazio star was quoted as saying: “I am a Lazio player but it is obvious that I was pleased that a coach of his stature came to watch the match.

“I read a little bit everywhere he was here at the stadium to see me play, but that does not mean anything. Maybe he was not here for me, but for someone else.”

Spurs Web Opinion

The fact that Mourinho watched him in action a couple of years ago does suggest that he is a fan of the Serbian international. I believe Milinkovic-Savic would be a fantastic replacement for Eriksen if we manage to pull it off but with his contract with Lazio running until 2024, he certainly won’t come cheap.
