Report: 51-year-old manager has turned down Tottenham’s approach

According to a report in German outlet WAZ (28/03/23 as relayed by Sport Witness), VFL Wolfsburg head coach Niko Kovac has turned down an approach from Tottenham Hotspur.

Over the last few days, multiple publications have revealed that Julian Nagelsmann has become Tottenham’s top managerial target after he parted ways with Bayern Munich (Football Insider).

WAZ have now suggested that Spurs also explored a move for another former Bayern boss in Kovac.

The publication claims that the North London club saw the Croat as one of the candidates that fit the profile of head coach they want and that Daniel Levy ‘commissioned his advisors to explore’ whether he would be interested.

However, Kovac is said to have made it clear that he would not take the job, which is why the negotiations ‘never got started’.

It is explained that the reason the 51-year-old rejected Spurs’ approach is that he has ‘principles that he strictly adheres to’, one of them being that he does not break contracts, which is why he is committed to staying at Wolfsburg until 2025.

Kovac might have been one of a whole host of candidates that Tottenham touched base with to find out if he is interested in the job.

However, I do not think the Croat would have been anywhere near the top of the North London club’s wishlist.
