Report: AC Milan are struggling to tie Spurs-linked star down to new deal

According to CalcioMercato, AC Milan’s attempts to tie reported Tottenham target Rafael Leao down to a new contract are proving to be unsuccessful.

Leao, who was adjudged to be the Serie A player of the year in 2021-22, has made a bright start to the new campaign, with six goals and nine assists to his name in all competitions so far (Transfermarkt).

However, there is some uncertainty over the forward’s future at the San Siro, with his current contract running only until 2024.

Fabio Cordella, who has served as the sporting director for the likes of Budapest Honved FC and Royale Union Saint-Gilloise in the past, revealed last month that Spurs are one of the clubs who are monitoring Leao’s situation (Calciomercato.it).

90 min reported a couple of weeks ago that Milan were ready to make the Portugal international the highest-paid player in Serie A in an effort to get him to commit his future to the club.

However, if CalcioMercato’s latest update is to believed, the Rossoneri’s talks with the player’s entourage have been successful.

The report explains that the Serie A giants are keen to keep hold of Leao but cannot afford to match the salary of €8m-€9m (£6.9m-£7.8m) that the 23-year-old is demanding.

Spurs Web Opinion

I do not think Milan will sell Leao in January. I suspect they will continue to try and tie him down to a new deal over the coming months, and would only cash in on him next summer if their efforts prove unsuccessful. It would perhaps take a substantial offer in January to change their minds.
