Report: AC Milan interested in midfielder Spurs tried to sign in January

According to Gazzetta dello Sport, AC Milan could enter the race for Roma midifelder, Jordan Veretout, who was rumoured to be on Tottenham’s radar during the January transfer window.

Reports from Italy claimed last month that Spurs tried to snap up Veretout in January (Tuttosport via Sport Witness).

However, the 28-year-old stayed put at the Stadio Olimpico, with The Athletic revealing that former Spurs boss Jose Mourinho blocked the player’s exit.

Spurs ended up snapping up Rodrigo Bentancur from Juventus instead and the Uruguayan has had a promising start to life in North London.

If Antonio Conte’s men decide to reignite their interest in Veretout in the summer, it looks as though they could now have competition to contend with from Milan, according to Gazzetta.

Interestingly, the report claims that Milan are looking at the French international as a potential replacement for Franck Kessie, who is expected to leave the San Siro when his contract runs out at the end of the season.

Kessie is thought to be on Tottenham’s wishlist, with the Lilywhites said to have made a ‘strong offer’ to snap him up in the summer (Sport).

The midfield department could certainly do with some freshening in the summer and I would not be surprised if Spurs were willing to listen to offers for both Winks and Hojbjerg when the transfer window reopens.

So, a player of Veretout’s profile could well be on Conte’s wishlist. However, a number 8 like Franck Kessie would be a bigger priority for Spurs given that neither Ndombele nor Lo Celso seem like they have a future at the club.
