Report: AC Milan planning talks with Spurs over summer transfer target

AC Milan could look to sign Tottenham Hotspur defender Emerson Royal this summer, according to the print edition of the Gazzetta dello Sport (13/5/24, page 27).

The Brazilian international has found himself down in Ange Postecoglou’s first-team squad pecking order following the form of Pedro Porro this season.

Royal was asked to operate in the unfamiliar role of left-back with both Destiny Udogie and Ben Davies sidelined for the remainder of the campaign and struggled against Chelsea and Liverpool which saw Postecoglou instead turn to midfielder Oliver Skipp for Saturday’s 2-1 win over Burnley.

The Italian news outlet claim that the Serie A giants have started to identify transfer targets ahead of the summer window but are not prepared to meet Tottenham’s current €30m (£25.7m) valuation of the former Barcelona player.

Talks between the Rossoneri and Tottenham are expected to take place in the coming weeks, however, Milan said to be prepared to move onto other targets if Spurs chairman Daniel Levy is not prepared to accept a lower fee.

Considering that Royal only has two years left remaining on his contract at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, the club need to be realistic with their valuation before it significantly drops next year.

Royal has done well to turn around his early problems at the club, however, given the direction and style of play that Ange Postecoglou wants to operate, Royal does not fit the bill.
