Report: Alderweireld linked with potential swap deal departure from Tottenham

Toby Alderweireld’s future at Tottenham Hotspur is set to come to a head over the next few months.

When Spurs decided to extend the Belgian’s contract in January to keep him at the club until the summer of 2020, it invoked a transfer release clause of just £25million which runs up until the last fortnight of the current transfer window (Telegraph).

If Alderweireld is to depart North London, Mauricio Pochettino will certainly need to dip into the transfer market to somehow try and replace the former Ajax man who has performed admirably in a Spurs shirt.

According to the Daily Star, Manchester United could be set to try and strike up a deal which would see Eric Bailly head to Spurs as part of an agreement with Alderweireld linking up with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side.

North London rivals Arsenal are also said to be keen on Bailly, who has suffered an injury-hit campaign with United who finished sixth in the Premier League.

He was signed by Jose Mourinho from Villarreal for £30million by Jose Mourinho (BBC) but has seen his progress stunted by his time spent in the United medical room.

Opinion

Tottenham fans will be holding out hope that a deal can still be struck with Alderweireld, however, time is certainly running out and with him being available for a bargain fee, he certainly will not be short of potential admirers who can offer him a substantial wage increase.
