Toby Alderweireld’s future at Tottenham Hotspur is set to come to a head over the next few months.

When Spurs decided to extend the Belgian’s contract in January to keep him at the club until the summer of 2020, it invoked a transfer release clause of just £25million which runs up until the last fortnight of the current transfer window (Telegraph).

If Alderweireld is to depart North London, Mauricio Pochettino will certainly need to dip into the transfer market to somehow try and replace the former Ajax man who has performed admirably in a Spurs shirt.

According to the Daily Star, Manchester United could be set to try and strike up a deal which would see Eric Bailly head to Spurs as part of an agreement with Alderweireld linking up with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side.

North London rivals Arsenal are also said to be keen on Bailly, who has suffered an injury-hit campaign with United who finished sixth in the Premier League.

He was signed by Jose Mourinho from Villarreal for £30million by Jose Mourinho (BBC) but has seen his progress stunted by his time spent in the United medical room.

Opinion

Tottenham fans will be holding out hope that a deal can still be struck with Alderweireld, however, time is certainly running out and with him being available for a bargain fee, he certainly will not be short of potential admirers who can offer him a substantial wage increase.

  1. How on earth can you sell a quality defender to a rival and accept a substandard replacement !! This stinks of Levy looking for a cheap alternative and no wonder Pochettino could leave.I cannot believe that this could be true.

  2. Do we really have to do business with United. Cannot he go back to Ajax and as for De Ligt. We always come of the worst when dealing with United.

  3. That would be awful, plus him going there. Why can’t we do a swap with Ajax! For De Ligt. Problem is (I presume) he wants massive wages somewhere, then maybe go back there in 3 years time to finish his career. Surely him and Spurs can do a deal after CL final. You can’t knock any player with 80+ caps. Him and Vertonghen play so well together. I do wonder if Davinson Sanchez will stay. Just seems Poch doesn’t prefer him and he is still about rough around the edges and rash. He can’t have liked being left out towards the end of the season, I think he did have an injury right at the end.
