Report: Another Tottenham defender suffers injury on international duty

John Wenham, who regularly breaks news regarding Tottenham’s youth players on his social media channel, Lilywhite Rose, has revealed that Ashley Phillips picked up an injury while featuring for England’s Under-19s on Tuesday.

Ange Postecoglou is currently dealing with a whole spate of injuries, with Richarlison, James Maddison and Micky Van de Ven joining the likes of Manor Solomon, Ivan Perisic and Ryan Sessegnon on the treatment table.

There are also doubts over Desity Udogie for the clash against Villa, with the left-back suffering from a hamstring issue (The Athletic) while Cristian Romero is suspended for two more matches.

That means that Postecoglou is down to the bare bones in defence and was forced to field a centre-back pairing of Ben Davies and Eric Dier against Wolves.

Tottenham’s lack of pace at the back left them quite exposed at times at the Molineux Stadium, which has perhaps raised the possibility of the Australian turning to an academy player against Aston Villa.

However, if Postecoglou was planning on starting Phillips on Sunday, he might have to shelve his plans, with Lilywhite Rose stating that the 18-year-old came off with an injury in England Under-19’s clash against Mexico.

Hopefully, Phillips was withdrawn as a precaution and the injury is not too serious. Even though the teenager was unlikely to start against Villa, Postecoglou needs him as an option on the bench, given the injuries and suspensions that he is currently dealing with.
