Report: Antonio Conte is ‘trying to convince’ player to stay at Tottenham

Estadio Deportivo have claimed that Antonio Conte’s stance on Bryan Gil has changed thanks to the winger’s recent displays, with the Italian now wanting the player to stay at the club.

It appeared a near certainty until a week ago that Gil would be loaned out by Spurs after the Spaniard failed to start a single game for the Lilywhites in the first part of the season.

However, the winger has started Tottenham’s last three games against Aston Villa, Crystal Palace, and Portsmouth amidst the injuries to Richarlison, Dejan Kulusevski and Lucas Moura, and the youngster has taken his opportunities.

He was one of Spurs’ best players on show at Selhurst Park on Wednesday, registering one assist and playing a part in the build-up to two other goals as the Conte’s men emerged with a 4-0 win. He was again one of the brighter sparks against Pompey in the FA Cup, alongside Pape Matar Sarr.

Estadio Deportivo have now revealed that while the likes of Valencia, Sevilla, Real Sociedad, Cadiz and Mallorca remain keen on signing Gil, their pursuit of the winger has become ‘complicated’ after his display against the Eagles.

The publication explains that the 21-year-old wants to get minutes under his belt and saw a loan move to Spain in January as the means to achieve that. However, it is asserted that Conte is now ‘trying to convince’ Gil to remain at the North London club.

If it is cover for Dejan Kulusevski that Spurs are after this transfer window, it would make sense to simply hang on to Gil instead.

However, it would not be a good move for the club to hang on to the Spaniard if they sign another attacker as that will mean that the 21-year-old is not likely to get any minutes during the remainder of the campaign.

If Tottenham do sign another winger or forward this month, it would be in the club’s best interest to loan out Gil so that he gets regular football under his belt and returns to the club a better player in the summer.
