Report: Antonio Conte wants 28-year-old signed if Harry Kane leaves Spurs

CalcioMercato have claimed that Antonio Conte wants Romelu Lukaku should Harry Kane depart Tottenham in the future.

Kane has two and a half years left to run on his contract with Tottenham (Transfermarkt) and although the striker has seemingly got his mojo back under Conte, there remains a question mark over his future.

In an interview with Sky Sports earlier this month, the England captain admitted that he is enjoying working with Conte but decided to keep his cards close to his chest when asked about his future.

It was previously reported that the Spurs head coach had asked the North London club hierarchy to swoop for Fiorentina striker Dusan Vlahovic (Gazzetta dello Sport).

However, Tottenham now look set to miss out on the Serbian, who is now reportedly close to completing a move to Juventus (Guardian).

CalcioMercato have now confirmed that Spurs did carry out several enquiries for Vlahvoic before Juventus entered the picture.

With the 21-year-old now out of the Lilywhites’ reach, it is explained that Conte would want to reunite with Lukaku, who he had tremendous success with at Inter Milan, in the event of Kane’s departure.

The Tottenham hierarchy would certainly be making contingency plans regarding Kane as there continues to be a real possibility of him departing in the summer.

The 28-year-old will have just two years left on his contract at the end of the season and the club would know that this summer would be the final window where they can get a sizable fee for the striker should he refuse to sign a contract extension.

So, I can certainly see some truth to this report about Conte’s interest in Lukaku amidst the Belgian’s struggles at Chelsea. Tottenham’s rumoured interest in Alvaro Morata (COPE) also makes sense in light of the uncertainty surrounding the England captain’s future.
