Report: Argentina make a decision on Cristian Romero’s Olympic dream

In what comes as a boost to Tottenham, ESPN reporter Esteban Edul has revealed that Cristian Romero is not one of the three senior players that Argentina want to take to the Olympic games.

Romero will have a busy summer, with the centre-back set to help Argentina defend their Cope America title which they won back in 2001.

Last month, the defender also suggested that he would be willing to be part of the country’s squad for the Olympic Games to be held in Paris from July to August.

Nations have to field an Under-23 side in the tournament but they are allowed to name three players over 23, with the Tottenham man telling TyC Sports that he would be prepared to go if he is called up.

That would potentially see the Spurs vice-captain miss the start of the season, which is perhaps why Ange Postecoglou suggested last week that Tottenham are not obliged to release players for the Olympics (Football London).

Romero is not expected to be called up for Argentina

It now seems like Postecoglou and Spurs can breathe a sigh of relief, with reports from Argentina suggesting that Romero will not be called up.

Edul took to social media to suggest that Javier Mascherano, who is in charge of the Albicelestes side that will travel to the Olympics, does not want Romero to be one of the three players over 23.

Instead, the former Barcelona defender wants to take Julian Alvarez, Emiliano Martinez and Nicolas Otamendi to Paris.

One would have thought that if Mascherano wanted to take one senior centre-back to the Olympics, it would be Romero over Otamendi.

However, Tottenham would have been well within their rights not to release the centre-back, given that he will also be involved in Copa America this summer.
