Report: Arsenal and Chelsea enter the race for forward linked with Spurs

Tottenham may have competition to contend with if they wish to sign Memphis Depay this season with reports from Spanish website Todofichajes revealing that Arsenal and Chelsea are also interested in the striker.

Depay’s spell with Manchester United did not go exactly as planned (L’Equipe), however, the Dutchman has had a new lease of life since moving to Lyon.

He has been predominantly used as a central striker rather than the wing-forward role he played at Old Trafford.

The 26-year-old made an impressive start to the season, netting 14 goals in 18 games (transfermarkt.com) and he looked to be on his way to finishing as Ligue 1’s top scorer this season only to pick up an ACL injury in December and has been sidelined ever since.

ESPN claim that Lyon are prepared to sell the Dutch international this summer for just £30million since he is entering the final year of his contract with the Ligue 1 club.

Todofichajes have now revealed that the striker is looking to leave Lyon and that Spurs, Arsenal and Chelsea are locked in a battle to sign him.

Spurs Web Opinion

I wouldn’t say this is out of the realms of possibility given that Depay is into the final year of his contract. Despite Mourinho being the man who sold him at Manchester United, it is clear that that the Portuguese coach and Depay have a lot of mutual respect for each other.

However, he is not an ideal fit for us as Jose is likely to be looking for a centre-forward like Llorente to offer us a plan B rather than someone like Depay who can run in behind defences.
