Report: Arsenal ‘closing in’ on £40m signing of Spurs-linked midfielder

The Sun have claimed that Arsenal are ‘closing in’ on the signing of Leicester City midfielder Youri Tielemans, who is also rumoured to be on Tottenham’s radar.

Tielemans has just one year left on his contract with the Foxes (Transfermarkt) and the midfielder has admitted that he is ready to make a step up to a ‘top European club’ (talkSPORT).

GiveMeSport claimed last month that Tottenham plan to make a move for the Leicester star in the summer should they qualify for the Champions League but according to The Telegraph, some at Spurs have reservations regarding a move for the 25-year-old.

The Sun have revealed that Tottenham’s North London rivals Arsenal are now the front-runners to snap up Tielemens, with the Gunners said to be ‘closing in’ on a £40m deal for the midfielder.

The report explains that Leicester are ‘all but resigned’ to losing the Belgian international this summer after he turned down the club’s contract offers.

The Sun state there is growing confidence from the player’s camp and the Emirates that Tielemans will be an Arsenal player next season.

However, they also add that Real Madrid are ready to pounce for the Foxes star if Mikel Arteta’s men fail to qualify for the Champions League.

Spurs Web Opinion

I am sceptical over whether Tielemens will be an upgrade over the options we already have in the central midfield area, particularly with Oliver Skipp to come back.

The Belgian would certainly strengthen the squad if he replaces Harry Winks but £40m is quite a steep price to pay for a backup midfielder.
